Wharncliffe Woods contains steep, wooded terrain and rough pasture with several streams. Wharncliffe is a stronghold for woodcock with a healthy population, and a wide variety of other birds can be see.
Wildlife highlights: Woodcock, Spotted flycatcher, Coal tit, Goldcrest, Siskin, Tree pipits, Blackcap, Nuthatch, Great spotted, Lesser spotted and Green Woodpeckers, Treecreeper, Sparrowhawk, Buzzard, Tawny owl, Nightjar, Dipper, Grey wagtail and Kingfisher are amongst many birds that you might see.

Access & Facilities: There are two walking trails in the wood, marked yellow and red. These are over rough terrain and can be wet under foot. There is a carpark The on Woodhead Road to the west of Chapletown.
