Ham Wall RSPB

Ham Wall is in the area known as the Avalon Marshes near Glastonbury, part of the Somerset Levels and Moors.

An internationally important wetland, the reserve has been created from worked-out peat diggings to form a mosaic of new wetland habitats and reedbeds covering 190 ha (469 acres).

Lots of wildlife has already been attracted to the land we have restored since 1994. Marsh harriers, garganeys and reed buntings breed here and water voles, otters and dragonflies can be seen on the open water.

Much of the restoration work on the reserve has been to provide suitable habitat for breeding bitterns, which already spend the winter here.

Open at all times

Wildlife highlights: See a good variety of wintering wetland wildlife including hundreds of gadwall, teal and wigeon using the reed edge and open water. Bitterns are regularly seen through the winter period, especially at dusk, joined by millions of starlings that use the reedbeds to roost.
