Vanishing Animals
Published by White Star. This coffee table book is a pictorial journey through the world's most spectacular endangered animals. Some of the photography is spectacular, but there is nothing particularly new. Each of the species covered has details of where they can be found, why they are endangered and what threats they face, and many of the photos are spectacular, but if you want hard information about conservation issues and threatened species, there are better books.
To give you an idea of the sort of information contained, "Gibbons are arboreal (tree) monkeys that live in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia." The selection of what is included seems to be governed by what is photographically appealing. So whilst Orang-utans merit 12 pages, okapi, don't get a mention. Polars bears are there in force, but no Belugas, and nothing much smaller than a large bird is mentioned, thereby ignoring probably 90% of the world's Vanishing Species.
Having said that, if great photos of rare animals is your thing, this book is as good as almost any other, and for each one sold 1 Euro gets donated to the WWF.
