Sparrow nest box

reviews/sparrow_nest_box

According to the BTO, House Sparrows are social birds, they, roost and breed colonially and need space to live together. This system of sparrow nest boxes has been cleverly designed to allow you to fit the boxes together in a range of ways, and to keep adding boxes. The boxes can be put in rows, diagonally, or even in diamonds, and the floor of each box slides out to allow cleaning.

Wildlife Extra has put our nest boxes up already. We don't expect for much action until the spring, but it is possible that some birds may be attracted to use the boxes as a winter home, and there is no harm in having your boxes up good and early. Again, according to the BTO, 'House Sparrows choose their nest-sites very early in the year so try to put up new boxes before Christmas'.

The nest box system is available from the Nestbox Company, and each box costs £11.75. All the timber is FSC certified.

BTO sparrow facts
There are still between six and seven million pairs of House Sparrow in Britain, but in the 1970s there were 12 million pairs.

House Sparrow populations have declined most in eastern England (90%) and south-east England (65%).

Lack of nest sites has been proposed as a factor reducing the number of House Sparrows in our towns and villages.
