A Life of Ospreys

reviews/ospreys_roy_dennis

Written by Roy Dennis

What Diane Fossey is to gorillas and David Shepherd is to Elephants, Roy Dennis is to ospreys. In April 1960 he started work at Loch Garten, almost the starting point for the ospreys recolonisation of Britain. He was instrumental in planning and relocating ospreys to Rutland Water in England, where they are now thriving.

The original Operation Osprey was launched after the only osprey nests in Britain were raided for 3-4 years, and no young fledged at all. Since then, the osprey has been so closely watched and studied that it is now probably amongst the best knwon species in the UK.

Almost every osprey in Britain is known individually, ringed, recorded and watched, and much of this was set up by Roy. He has also studied ospreys in many other parts of the world, so if you want to know anything about ospreys, you need to get this book.

Things we now know about ospreys

  • Almost every detail about the Loch Garten details - Which birds, how many eggs, when they arrived and departed, how many fledged.
  • How many ospreys there are in the UK - region by region
  • What fish they eat
  • Where they migrate to, and what routes they follow
  • Number of eggs and fledglings per brood.

Other birds

Although best knowm for his work with ospreys, Roy has also been involved with many other species, including Golden eagles, seabirds and Eagle owls.
