Mokoia Island is small, at just 1.35 kilometres, and lies in the middle of Lake Rotorua. The island reaches 180 metres above the level of the lake, and was formed as a lave dome during an eruption.
Mokoia Island is owned by local Maori iwi, who maintain it with the New Zealand Department of Conservation. Mokoia Island is a bird sanctuary and can only be accessed on an organised tour, which are strictly limited.
Mokoia Island has housed a number of endangered species since 1990 and has been a pest-free island since 2001.
Wildlife: Kokako, kiwi, tui, weka, north island robin, pukeko, and a breeding population of the endangered Saddleback.
Location: In the middle of Lake Rotorua. Trips leave from the Rotorua lakefront.
